There’s almost never a quiet moment in the Ekström household. With his partner, Heidi, Mattias Ekström has two children: son Mats, who was born in spring of 2011, and daughter Hanna, born in January 2013. Describing his two little ones, Mattias Ekström says, “Mats is a bouncy character who causes and needs a lot of action. Hanna, fortunately, takes more after her mother.” Ekström himself is close to his mother, Agneta, and his father, Bengt. The two Swedes with a zest for life have always supported the career of their son and watched most of his DTM races live at the race track. Other long-standing members of the family are Moss and Lou. The two Jack Russel terriers have been following Heidi and Mattias around for many years.
Audi has been Mattias Ekström’s brand on and off the race track since 1999. He clinched his biggest successes with the Ingolstadt-based brand and in their private life Heidi, Mats, Hanna, Moss and Lou have plenty of room in an A6 allroad quattro.
The Swedish racer is featured in advertising activities of Europe’s top-selling and best-known car magazine. But the partnership goes far beyond his wearing of the logo. Serving on the judging panel for the “Golden Steering Wheel” is one of the high points for Ekström.
After ten years, Mattias Ekström had his fill of hotel beds and has been living in the motorhome of Concorde on DTM weekends ever since then. His own shower, a comfortable bed, pasta from his own pot plus his own espresso machine all serve to bring a touch of home to the paddock.
A racer would never accept even the slightest compromise when it comes to his helmet. That’s why Mattias Ekström relies on his partner Schuberth with whom he has custom-developed the helmet that is perfect for him.
Red Bull and Mattias Ekström – motorsport without this combination is something that has been hard to imagine for many years. Whether providing the color for his car, as a partner at other adventures or at numerous joint events, the energy drink producer and the racer have been forming a strong team.
